Buy Local Week: A celebration of local and a chance to shop, eat, and just have fun

Dubbed "a celebration of our local heroes" Lowcountry Local First is putting on its annual celebration of local business.

Read more stories on this subject in our Lowcountry Local First topic page.The idea is to promote shopping in the local community as not only does it encourage more vibrancy in the local community, but word is more of the money spent at local shops stays in the community.

The week officially runs from Monday, November 30, until Sunday, December 6. But things don't really get going until the first event on Tuesday, December 1.

Here's details from the release:

December 1, 2009: Independent Movie and After Party at the Hippodrome

LLF will be showing the documentary film Paperback Dreams: The Life and Times of the Independent Bookstore. The film starts at 7:00 and will be followed by a panel discussion and after party at the Hippodrome Lounge! 

December 2, 2009: Eat Local Night

Lowcountry Local First invites you to participate in the 2nd "Eat Local Night." The goal - to spotlight the wide diversity of locally owned and operated restaurants, local food, and to encourage the public to support our local economy. Participating restaurants will donate 5% of the evenings sales to LLF!  

December 3, 2009: PURE Theater's "It's a Wonderful Life: 1940's Radio Show"

This American classic comes to life on stage as a 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Presented by PURE Theater who is generously donating 20% of the evening's proceeds to LLF. 7:30pm

December 5, 2009: Holiday Stroll

Join LLF business in downtown Charleston, Mt. Pleasant and Avondale for a wonderful time making that big shift to local in your holiday shopping! Many shops will be offering refreshments, special promotions and entertainment! See local business promotions!

December 5, 2009: Alternative Giving Fair

A way to give a gift and help people in your community at the same time. It is with this simple idea that the Charleston Alternative Gift Fair came to be. A way for people to give a gift during the Holidays and help support a non-profit.

11-4 p.m. at Gage Hall (4 Archdale St)

December 6, 2009: The Buy Local, Be Local Bash

7-10 p.m. at The Landing at Shem Creek

The 3rd Annual Buy Local, Be Local Bash will take place at The Landing at Shem Creek. This celebration of our local independents will take a different twist this year by highlightening the wonderful caterers and "food businesses" that we have in our area. The evening will feature live music, great food, beer, wine, and a local hero slide show.
