1970s photos of Daufuskie offer a portal to another Lowcountry time

In the 1970s Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe snapped a set of photos documenting life on Daufuskie Island, an island near Hilton Head that even today is still very rural and accessible only by ferry.

Well today those photos are on display at the Gibbes Museum of Art through January 10.

Nick Smith has put together a nice preview of the show for the Charleston City Paper; read it over here.

Fun fact: The name Daufuskie comes from the Gullah pronunciation of "the first key." That is, the first key island north of the Savannah River.
