They're baaaack. This weekend marks the comebacks of the Charleston Farmers Market, Kulture Klash, the Charleston Air Expo, the Charleston Battery, Pet Fest, and Second Sunday on King Street.
If that sounds like a lot to take in during just one weekend, you're right. I get a little lightheaded just thinking about it all myself. To help you plan your weekend, I'll go ahead and break down the biggest and baddest events on the horizon.
First up, the much beloved Charleston Farmers Market returns to Marion Square from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. We've got the official list of food vendors for this year, but don't forget that there is much more than food. Crafts, art, farm fresh veggies, and more can all be found at the market.
The Charleston Air Force Base's aviation extravaganza, the Charleston Air Expo, has been set for Saturday, April 9th. The big feature this year is a high-speed maneuver air show courtesy of the Air Force's Thunderbird team and the Geico Skytypers.
The defending USL champions, the Charleston Battery, open their 2011 season at home this Saturday night when they take on the Charlotte Eagles at 7:30 p.m. The Battery are offering up free schedule cups, cheap drinks, and Friday night fireworks to start the season off right.
The minds behind Kulture Klash have been hard at work and are gearing up to bring us some never-before-seen performances and installations, amazing art, great music, and one hell of a party for the festival's seventh installment. This time the theme is water, and in true Kulture Klash fashion, the organizers have cranked it to 11 by setting up indoor wakeboarding. I don't quite get it yet either, but I'm pumped to see it go down.
Pets and their owners are invited to join Charleston County Parks for a full weekend of exhibits, demonstrations, experts, entertainment, and more at Pet Fest 2011. Mount Pleasant's Palmetto Islands County Park is going to the dogs (and cats, and birds, and exotics) all weekend long.
It's the second Sunday of the month, and that means that from 1 to 5 p.m., King Street from Calhoun to Broad will be shut down to all vehicular traffic. Shop, walk, eat, and drink in the streets while you have the opportunity.
The Family Circle Cup continues this weekend and culminates with the final match on Sunday.
It may be too late to register, but it definitely isn't too late to view the always entertaining heats of the Charleston Bed Race. On Sunday, come out for the second most fun you can have in bed at the second annual Charleston Bed Race benefitting Camp Happy Days, to be held at 3 p.m on Mary Murray Boulevard, just past the horse stables in Hampton Park.
