As a native Charlestonian, it was not surprising to see a few rather familiar people and places on this year's 'Best of Charleston' lists.

Everyone (and thing) from the honorable Mayor Joseph P. Riley Junior to the everlasting Angel Oak tree all received nods from the Charleston City Paper.

But there were a few categories that did a better of stretching one's imagination to its breaking point than paying homage to the Holy City. Just to name a few:

- 'Best Fight Between a Dog Park and an Arts Center'
- 'Best Effort to Cash in on Obamania'

And the all-time favorite:

- 'Best Place to Buy Old-Lady Jewelry, an Antique Birdcage, and Yoga Jeans'

Despite the sheer frivolity of some of these categories, you have to give it up to the Paper for recognizing some lesser-appreciated spots such as The Terrace Theater for 'Best Movie Theater' and Madra Rua Irish Pub for 'Best Authentic Pub.'

Heck! Even TheDigitel got some love from the powers that be.

In the end, the 'Best of Charleston' lists should be looked at as an opinionated sort of thing, because as the saying goes: "If they're talking about it, you must be doing something right."

Go dive in at the beginning.
