Horry Telephone Cooperative gave Horry County students incentive to recycle their families' unwanted phone books - money towards technology in their schools. The books have been counted and the winners have been announced.
More than 40,000 phone books were recycled by approximately 70 schools. The school that recycled the most was St. Michael's Catholic School in Garden City. The school that recycled the most per student was Holy Trinity Catholic School in North Myrtle Beach. Those two schools alone had a combined total of 13,988 phone books. Impressive!

According to this source:
for each 500 books recycled, we save:
- 7,000 gallons of water
- 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
- 17 to 31 trees
- 4,100 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power an average home for six months
According to my calculations, Horry County students have saved over a half-million gallons of water, more than 260 cubic yards of landfill space, at least 1360 trees, and 328,000 kilowatts of electricity. That equates to 40 years of power for an average home. Again I say, impressive!
