For every 'like', $1 will fight Charleston hunger

The Lowcountry Food Bank and East Cooper Community Outreach have teamed up Hendrick Auto Group for a creative take on fighting hunger: trading Facebook page likes for dollars to fight malnutrition.

The "Charleston Drive for Hunger" will run until January 11 and will trade $1 for each "like" on the Facebook Charleston Drive page.

As of late on January 3, the page had 997 likes, including the liking efforts of yours truly, so go on and like the page over here.

"Recent studies show our region's hunger and poverty needs are making huge demands on local care-giving organizations," said Brad Davis, Executive General Manager of Rick Hendrick Imports. "Supplies traditionally run low immediately after the holidays and this is a great way to help jump start community giving in 2012."

A goal of $8,000 has been set to be split between the Food Bank and East Cooper Community Outreach.

The Lowcountry Food Bank was founded in 1983 and serves 320 member agencies to fight hunger in 10 counties of coastal South Carolina. East Cooper Community Outreach provides safety net services for low-income families and those in need while empowering them to create a better future for themselves. ECCO provides emergency assistance, food, clothing, essential medical services and much more to address poverty in our region.
