February Meeting Agenda
The next membership meeting of the Carolina Forest Civic Association is 6pm Wednesday, February 15, in the HTC building. One of the main orders of business will be the introduction of our newest director. The board is accepting candidates at their Feb. 8 meeting to replace outgoing Vice President Cliff Abrams. A new board member will be appointed and introduced at the membership meeting, and new officers will be named.
This month’s guest speaker is Rick Shelley, Director of Workforce and Development for Goodwill of Horry County. The new Goodwill Retail Store of Carolina Forest, located at 2164 Oakheart Road, is set to open on February 16. Shelves and clothing racks are stocked with new and gently used items generously donated during the recent collection drives. The 15,000 square foot store will feature a Job Link Center which will offer free employment services to residents of the community. These services include access to computers for job searches, assistance with resumes and other resources.
Economic development is one of the priorities identified by members of the Civic Association, and unemployment falls under that umbrella. Goodwill’s mission is “to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work.” Over 90 percent of the revenue from the Goodwill Retail Stores is used to fund that mission. Mr. Shelley will discuss how Goodwill can offer a hand up, not a handout, to members of our community who need a chance, not a charity, to get back to work. The CFCA is excited to have this new store in The Forest.
Great Carolina Forest Spring Roadside Litter Clean Up
On January 18, the Families in the Forest committee was awarded a $2,000 Palmetto Pride grant. More details are here. Also planned is the Great Carolina Forest Spring Roadside Litter Clean Up, which will begin at 9am on Saturday, March 31. Volunteers from high school age on up are asked to donate 2 hours of their time. Bags, gloves, safety vests and refreshments will be provided. There will be surprise giveaways as well. A waiver will need to be signed by a parent or guardian for volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17.
Registration will begin at 9am near Giovanni’s in the former Piggly Wiggly shopping center. Volunteers will be assigned to clean up areas along Carolina Forest Blvd, River Oaks and International Drive. Every section has an assigned supervisor, and every effort will be made to place volunteers in front of their neighborhood. I have been assigned as the supervisor for the stretch of CFB in front of Walkers Woods. Lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the event.
