In an effort to help fight illiteracy in the Lowcountry, Mellow Mushroom Charleston is participating with in Third Cup Charleston from Friday June 18 to Sunday July 18.

Third Cup Charleston is a community wide initiative directed at empowering Charleston’s youth through literacy and service. This venture is a partnership with Charleston County School District, College of Charleston and the Mayor’s Office for Children, Mellow Mushroom Charleston, Youth and Families.

The project is centered on Charleston’s youth reading and learning the miraculous true story “Three Cups of Tea”. The #1 New York Times best selling book is about an ordinary man’s determination, Greg Mortenson, to change the world through educating children. The culmination of the project will be a lecture by Greg Mortenson at the College of Charleston.

Over 3,000 students in the Charleston County School District will be participating in the Third Cup Charleston project. The funding of the books for the project will come solely from private donations made by businesses, organizations and ordinary citizens in the Charleston community.

Literacy and service are two of the most important ingredients in building a strong prosperous community. Supporting this project by making a donation is a small but great opportunity for the citizens of Charleston to empower a child’s life by promoting literacy and service. A donation of $5 purchases the book, “Three Cups of Tea” for child participating in the Third Cup Charleston project.

Guests of Mellow Mushroom Charleston can donate $5 between Friday June 18 and Sunday July 18 when they dine in the restaurant.
