Folly to revisit late-night alcohol sales

In an about-face on the issue of beer and wine sales after 2 a.m., Folly Beach City Council has suspended the ban they passed only days ago pending another hearing on the ordinance next month. Councilwoman Laura Beck requested the temporary reversal after realizing that the new rule took effect immediately. She voted in favor of the ban Tuesday night.

From The Post and Courier:

The move allows the two affected businesses, Bert's Supermarket and Kangaroo, to begin selling beer and wine again in the early morning hours, at least until Aug. 24 when the ordinance goes back to council.

Beck said she and at least one other council member didn't realize the law would go into effect immediately. She said that, at the least, she would like the law's starting date moved to January so that the businesses have time to adjust.

She also said a fair number of residents contacted her to say they were worried about the alcohol ban causing an increase in DUIs.

So maybe all those late-nighters won't have to go too far to get their last few beers after all.
