First reporting:

What if I told you there was an Irish-style pub opening soon on Johns Island that didn't serve clover-foamed Guinness, had no TV's, and was members-only?

You might think I'm kidding, and if not you might think it sounds crazy. But that's exactly what Seanachai Social Club, a yet-to-open joint on Maybank Highway aims to do. "Seanachai" is a word reserved for old Irish storytellers who acted as cultural pillars holding up the tales and traditions of old. They were the glue of their community, and that intention translates well to this establishment.

The pub is a beautiful, cozy, wood-covered room that already feels homey enough to be a clubhouse. The lack of TV's is a distinct part of the plan: the creation of a space meant to foster community and conversation, one of the biggest parts of Irish (and English) pub culture lacking in the States. The room is designed to make you make friends.

The preliminary membership plan takes this a step further. Annual or lifetime memberships are available for a nominal fee, with a different set of perks attached to each. Both will get you a card, a t-shirt, the opportunity to bring a guest on each visit, and a significant discount at the bar. Part of the membership form allows you to sign up for clubs, covering topics from craft beer to chess to film. The ideal outcome would be for Seanachai to be a second home for members, a comfortable place to get away with friends, swap stories, and relax.

Seanachai Social Club is located at 3157 Maybank Highway on Johns Island. Connect with them on Facebook, and keep and eye on their website for more info on opening times, membership, and whatnot.  Check out a handful of other pics at my Flickr page.
