Indigo Road group launching 'The Cocktail Club' on Upper King (update: opening this month)

Steve Palmer, managing partner of the Indigo Road restaurant group

Update June 15: Okay, so the Cocktail Club didn't quite meet their April opening, but managing partner Steve Palmer says that the new opening date is coming up soon, on June 24th, to be exact.

And in anticipation of the opening of Cocktail Club (479 King Street), Palmer gave Charleston City Paper a behind-the-scenes look at the space and what to expect from Charleston's speakeasy tribute.

Here's what you can look forward to once the Cocktail Club opens:

  • An open atmosphere with brick walls and exposed beams
  • A rooftop bar--one of the only ones in the area
  • A drink menu inspired by the Prohibition Era
  • Monthly cocktail classes
  • Killer happy hour specials
  • Custom-made liquors

First reporting: Steve Palmer, managing partner of the Indigo Road restaurant group, announced today that he will open his newest venture, the Cocktail Club, on upper King Street in April of 2011.

Located at 479 King Street, the Cocktail Club will be a nostalgic tribute to a 1920s speakeasy, presenting a timeless selection of hand-crafted cocktails and libations in a classic, refined atmosphere. The Prohibition-style venue will have a spacious lounge as well as upper King Street’s only rooftop patio, bringing a multi-dimensional destination to the popular downtown neighborhood.

“I have always been passionate about the potential and promise that upper King Street has for Charleston, and I could not be more excited to contribute to its growing success,” said Palmer, who also manages Oak Steakhouse and O-Ku restaurants. “I personally love the ambiance and mystique of an upscale speakeasy, and am proud to present the Cocktail Club to Charleston this spring.”

Inspired by the popularity of O-Ku’s specialty cocktails, which was developed by beverage director Kane Sanders and bartender Jasmine Beck, the Cocktail Club will offer an extensive selection of spirits and hand-crafted cocktails. Beck, who recently won the Bacardi Mojito Challenge for the “Jasmanian Devil,” will serve as partner and beverage director for the Cocktail Club when it opens this April.
