Before the secession, this was the first Confederate flag

Before there was war, and before South Carolina had seceded, Captain Edward Mills had raised this flag. It would soon be the flag of the Palmetto Guard and then fly above the Confederate-occupied Fort Sumter.

Today the flag lives on as the foreruner the modern South Carolina flag -- before the Civil War the South Carolina flag had only a crescent.

You can learn more about the history of the Palmetto Guard flag in this New York Times clipping from 1875.
