The ARK Hosts Leader Training for Powerful Tools for Caregivers Class

Caring for a family member or friend with a chronic condition can be physically, emotionally and financially draining. But when caregivers have the skills and knowledge to better care for themselves, they can minimize the potentially negative impacts of caregiving.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a highly effective, evidence-based, self-care education program for family caregivers. The ARK, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, is hosting a Certified Powerful Tools for Caregivers Leader Class in October.

“Research on Powerful Tools for Caregivers has consistently shown increased self-efficacy for caregivers who participate in the six-week program emphasizing self-care and empowerment,” said The ARK’s Micky Styslinger, a certified master trainer. “Now we need additional course leaders who can help the growing number of caregivers in our community and beyond.”

This two-day leader training prepares and certifies Powerful Tools for Caregivers class leaders to successfully co-lead the six-week class series. The training program includes:

  • Scripted curriculum for both the caregivers of adults with chronic conditions as well as the caregivers of children with special needs classes.
  • Intensive, experiential and interactive training provided by a team of certified Powerful Tools for Caregivers master trainers.
  • Learning and practicing group leadership and facilitation skills.
  • DVDs used in caregiver classes.
  • One-time certification fee.

Styslinger and fellow certified master trainer Peg Lahmeyer will teach the course, allowing others around South Carolina and neighboring states to bring the Powerful Tools for Caregivers to their community. Class leaders will be fully prepared to co-lead Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes to groups of up to 15 family caregivers who are caring for adults with chronic conditions as well as children with special needs.

The course is 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 6-7 at The ARK, 206 Central Ave. in Summerville. Cost is $325 per person. To register or for questions, contact Micky Styslinger at 843-670-3317 or NoahProject@theARKofSC.org.
