Downtown Beaufort bridge open again after crane strike (Updated)

Watch out, low clearance.

(Updates at the bottom.)

The Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge was closed for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon, August 2, after an overhead metal beam was struck by a crane.

Unlike other past bridge collisions with Beaufort area bridges, this was not by a boat but rather a truck carrying the tall crane.

Inspectors gave the bridge an OK around 3 p.m.

In 2007 the J.E. McTeer Bridge connecting Port Royal and Lady's Island was struck by a barge causing the bridge to be closed. And in May a shrimp boat struck the Harbor Island Bridge resulting in a brief closure.

Update: WTOC 11 offers a photo of the utility truck with crane that struck the bridge support beam; see it here.
