Seems with today's technology if polls close at 7 p.m. we should start getting results at 7:30 at the latest. It's really just a plug-and-play thing. Still that's never the case, and it especially wasn't the case years ago when we still used paper ballots.

Island Packet columnist David Lauderdale has a nice little piece on what sitting through an election night is like, especially when you're waiting on ballots to be boated in from Daufuskie Island. You can read that here.

The Packet also has a follow-up report with the county's elections director on some of the issues that came up on Tuesday and how he'll work to resolve them in the future. Read that here.

Still, with all that, no word on why we were left waiting until almost 9:30 to see any results from Beaufort County, and why the final results didn't come until past 11 p.m. 

With today's technology, that just doesn't seem right.
