Tornado touches down during Monday's stormy weather

Approximate touchdown location.

Monday brought much in the way of winds, water, and downed trees to Beaufort, but up the road and just over the county line into Jasper, things were a bit windier.

The National Weather Service says that a tornado touched down about 8 miles south of Ridgeland near 5:21 p.m. west of Okatie and then moved east-northeast before lifting near S.C. 462.

The tornado was believed to be an EF-1 class with winds between 85 and 95 mph — in all the storm spanned a path 4.1 miles long and fell some 500 trees.
