Fripp Island man strays into national limelight after cutting California $10,000 check

Some 46 years ago Dennis R. Ferguson lost his job at Douglas Aircraft and subsequently relied on unemployment aid for four months.

And it's that help that he credits with allowing him to change careers to be a computer programmer and, by the looks of it, do quite well and retire on Fripp Island. For the $1,100 of support, Ferguson appears quite grateful and has sent California a $10,000 check to repay them plus interest in hopes that his act will help California get off its struggling feet.

The Los Angeles Times has a nice report of Ferguson's act of generosity and how the money will be used; take a read here.
