USCB partnering with local Boys and Girls Club for S.M.A.R.T. event

The University of South Carolina Beaufort announced Thursday, May 12 that they will be teaming with the Jasper County Boys and Girls Club for a S.M.A.R.T. professional development program for the club's young woman. The event will be held on campus Saturday and Sunday May 21 and 22.

According to the press release, which you can read in full below, those involved will review various college paperwork such as entrance requirements and examinations, create for themselves cover letters and resumes, and will be the subject of mock interviews.

Media Advisory: S.M.A.R.T. Girls Locked in for the Future at USCB May 12, 2011  Bluffton, SC- The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry and University of South Carolina Beaufort are collaborating in support of a personal and professional development program (S.M.A.R.T.) for young women (ages 12-14). Twenty-Five adolescents will  be paired with female USCB students and Boys and Girls Club staffers, otherwise known as Team Leaders, for an on campus overnight experience. They will participate in numerous activities, including the below workshops: 1.    Ready for School – Participants will review resources related to college access and readiness (types of institutions, entrance requirements and examinations, availability of financial aid, academic majors to choose from). This workshop also serves to demystify the inaccessibility of colleges and universities. 2.    Ready for Work – Participants will learn essential knowledge and skills necessary for proper workforce development (composition of a cover letter and resume, interview skills). 3.    Ready for Life – Team leaders will conduct “VISTAs on the Future” interviews and complete asset maps for participants that will help to identify short and long term personal and professional goals and action plans. 4.    Addressing Women’s Health – Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services will present information related to emotional and physical wellness for young women.   What              A personal and professional development program (S.M.A.R.T.) for young women (ages 12-14). Where            USCB Campus Center (Hilton Head Gateway Campus)  When             Saturday,  May 21st 3:00pm until 10:00am Sunday, May 22nd. Sponsors     The majority of this program is funded by federal grant dollars via the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, and will be hosted/ facilitated by University of South Carolina Beaufort administrators and students.   ABOUT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF THE LOWCOUNTRYGreat futures start at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry.  Club programs are the core of the members' activities.  People know the Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe and secure place for club members to interact with their friends, classmates, and staff every day after school and during the summer.  What many people don't know is what happens inside the clubs' programs to create seeds of academic success, athletic performance, artistic expression, civic involvement and character development.
