Port Royal estuarium closing its doors (update: it's over on Saturday)

Update July 26: Perhaps unsurprisingly, the penny-tight Beaufort County Council elected to not give the Lowcountry Estuarium funding

What's it mean? Saturday will be the last day the estuarium's doors will open to the public, so go down and check it out one last time.

And don't forget, you can donate to the group here.

Update July 19: The estuarium's Bob Bender has made a plea to County Council for some last-minute funding to help the Port Royal facility stay open.

The Island Packet has a report on how the council's Finance group didn't decide on Bender's request, but seems to sentimental to his plight.

Also, check out the video above of Bender with the kids. Their wide eyes make you wonder if it isn't indeed worth the $24,000 to keep the estuarium open.

Update July 11: While the news of the esturarium's immenent closing to the public is sad, WSAV's Brittany Shane has livened our spirits a bit with a nice tour.

Check it out over here or down below.

First reporting: It appears the Lowcountry Estuarium that has called Port Royal home for several years is calling it quits, mostly due to financial issues.

You can check out The Island Packet story here.

While the facility appears to be closing, it's nice to see its chief, Bob Bender, will funnel a lot of his knowlege into the the estuarium's website and some classroom visits.

If you'd like to help reverse the decision, you can donate to the group here.
