1850-1940: Historical perspectives on Christmas in Beaufort

TheDigitel

The Beaufort District Collection is calling your attention to four collections that shed light on Christmas observations in Beaufort from the 1850s to 1940s.

Intertwined in those collections are observations of Gullah celebrations, Christmas on the plantations and what it meant for slaves, and observations on spartan celebrations ranging from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th.

Take a read of their overview and recommendations on the Collection's blog.

You can read one of the books "Letters from Port Royal, 1862-1868" in its entirety online

You can visit the Beaufort District Collection in the upstairs portion of the Beaufort Library at 311 Scott Street in downtown.
