The new $153 million, 140-bed East Cooper Regional Medical Center’s steel superstructure was completed on Friday, October 17. The final steel beam was lowered into place carrying dozens of signatures, an American flag, and a palmetto tree to ward of evil spirits — you might be more familiar with the evergreen tree tradition in the form of a Christmas tree.

Roper St. Francis is also building a $143 million, 85-bed hospital further north in Mount Pleasant, lets just hope they don’t wind up over building capacity, too.
