Folly bans late-night alcohol sales

No more beer runs for late drinkers on Folly Beach, as council members voted to end the city’s controversial allowance of alcohol sales between 2 and 6 a.m. In a 5-2 vote Tuesday night, City Council passed the second reading of the ordinance, making it official.

Those supporting the proposal said too many people are out after 2 a.m. partying on the streets and leaving trash on the beach.

Bert (Hastings of Bert’s Market) says trash and partying won’t stop because his business can’t sell beer or wine at that time, and he worries in the future he won’t be able to serve people at all during 2 to 6 a.m.

Bert’s Market says they will do what they can to get city council to reconsider the decision. They say they want to get this issue on a referendum so the public can decide whether to allow sales.

We should note that the ban only affects two businesses that were selling beer and wine between 2 and 6 a.m.: Bert’s Market and the BP on Center Street. According to Live 5, the ordinance goes into effect at 2 a.m. Tuesday.
